Building Blocks of Leadership Success

(June 6, 2011)  KRS was proud to present its June Saturday reading program on the Building Blocks of Leadership Success.  The kids read biographies and watched film clips about influential Latino/a leaders in different industries, including educator Jaime Escalante, actor Edward James Olmos, astronaut Ellen Ochoa, labor organizer Dolores Huerta, musician Carlos Santana, and Supreme Court Justice Sonio Sotomayor.  The kids discussed leadership traits shared by these leaders and what made them stand out as leaders in their respective fields.  Then, guest speaker Jesse Torres, president of Pan American Bank (the oldest Latino-owned bank in Southern California), inspired the kids to become leaders themselves with some practical and specific advice on how to lead.

The kids also received certificates of achievement for their participation throughout the year in KRS, and they also received books to keep from Hyperion Books (thank you, Disney!).

STARS will be dark during the summer months and will resume KRS' Saturday reading programs in September.  KRS is excited to kick off its Saturday reading programs at the Union Rescue Mission and Villa-Parke Community Center on July 9, 2011.  To  volunteer, go to our Get Involved page.
