(Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard with KRS students on June 5, 2010)
Dear friends,
We hope you are all enjoying the lazy days of summer! KRS and our wonderful kids are on summer break until we return on September 11, 2010 for our third academic year of reading fun!
Before we went on break, KRS had a productive June '10 reading program. City of Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard dropped by and read a KRS volunteer-favorite Dr. Seuss book Oh, the Places You'll Go to the kids. Hector S., one of our KRS students, did a great job introducing the Mayor to KRS by reading his biography. The kids then presented a thank-you frame to the Mayor. The kids then read with their assigned volunteers and made some lovely Father's Day frames and bookmarks. A big thank you is due to our volunteer & curriculum chair Nancy Fong and her firm,Allen Matkins for sponsoring the June program, providing snacks, journals, and art supplies for this month's art projects!
We awarded our first Volunteer of the Year award to Jennifer Cheung, who has been in charge of our art projects for the past year. Thank you, Jennifer! KRS students also received certificates for their reading achievement throughout the year. As an extra incentive for the kids to read this summer, we are awarding a prize to the person who reads and writes the most book reports in their new journals.

We have some exciting developments ahead, chief among them, our very first fundraiser to raise money for books and other supplies for KRS students. Save the date in your calendar - Sept. 30th at Red White Bluezz restaurant in Pasadena - for what will be an exciting event!
Happy reading,
Deborah Yao & Susie Lu,
KRS Executive Directors
