In May we held our popular culinary program in cooperation
with the Culinary Academy, led by Donnetha Wallace, at Blair High School. From
9 to 10 am, students at Jackson Elementary and the Villa Parke Community Center
worked with our volunteers to improve their reading skills before the start of
summer break.
KRS students learn how to make fruit kebabs
During the second half of the program,
graduating seniors Erika Martinez and Edwin Madrid held a cooking class for the
KRS students at Villa Parke while Maria Flores led the program at Jackson
Elementary. The speakers stressed the importance of literacy skills and reading
comprehension when following a recipe. After having the students read the
recipe, the speakers demonstrated how to make fruit kebabs with fresh apricot
yogurt sauce. Also emphasized was the importance of sanitation when handling
food. At the end of the program, students received second helpings and books to
take home for the summer.
